Shimbun
is a monthly publication of Silangan Communications, a
Filipino-owned company based in Japan. Predominantly written in the Filipino
language, the paper provides news and information from our own pool of
writers and contributors based in the Philippines, Japan, Singapore and Australia. Silangan
also avails of the feed service of
Reuters and the Philippines News Agency. Its first issue came out in August 1999, catering mainly
to the Filipino community in Japan.
The warm support of the Filipino community in
the East Asian archipelago encouraged the editorial staff set their eyes to the
international scene. In March of 2003, Silangan Shimbun evolved
from a community paper into an Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) publication.
With this change, Silangan carries articles and feature stories that focus on
news, developments and community activities of the more than seven million Filipinos
working and residing abroad.

Main section: Highlights political and
economic news in the Philippines, Asia and the rest of the world in Filipino,
English. It also features socio-political commentaries, as well as human-interest stories from
different parts of the globe.

Lifestyle section: Covers success
stories of Filipino personalities all over the world. It also features essays on life,
health, travel and other articles of interest to overseas Filipinos.

Entertainment section: Provides
up-to-date entertainment news, views and interviews from the Philippines and the international
scene.
